San Diego Chargers moving to downtown L. a., will play in Farmers Field

The NFL’s returning to Tinseltown.

Naming rights to a stadium in L.A. have sold for 30 years worth a figure between $600M and $700M to Farmers Insurance, AEG and Farmers announced at press conference this morning … and the shiny new building (which has yet to be fully approved) can have a tenant.

The San Diego Chargers will move back up the coast for the 1st time since 1961. The move would likely are available 2013, but can be once 2012, and as late as 2015, when construction at the stadium can be completed. The Chargers would play within the La Coliseum earlier than taking on residence within the downtown facility.

The source spoke on a condition of anonymity because no official announcement have been made.

The stadium rights were announced the identical day the Chargers were ready to opt out in their current lease. Between Feb. 1 and April 30 of every year through 2020, the Chargers can announce their intentions to go away in the event that they repay the $26 million in bonds used to expand Qualcomm in 1997. AEG’s Phil Anschutz, who were rumored to have an interest in buying the Chargers in December, looms because the benefactor who will step in to the Chargers aid.  They may be expected to make the announcement this year, once the recent CBA was struck.

It’s also entirely possible a second team – sources say either the Vikings or Jaguars – can be joining the Chargers, because the naming rights deal amps as much as $1 billion if the town is in a position to secure two tenants.

The move have been ages coming for the Chargers organization, because the city’s recent push for a Nov 2012 ballot measure authorizing the spending of public money on a brand new stadium hasn’t generated much political (or public) support in a city with a lengthy history of ambivalence toward Chargers brass and the Spanos family particularly.

The Chargers had been looking to negotiate a brand new stadium in San Diego since March 4, 2003, when the Chargers activated the Trigger of their lease agreement.

Ever since 2004, when the team’s “seat guaranty” deal ended (a bargain that cost the town over $36 million for empty seats, to offer the Chargers a “guaranteed sellout” worth of revenue), the Chargers has been seeking to coax money out of town, including a failed 2006 referendum for a football-only facility.

The Chargers needed that public funding to remain in San Diego, however the naming rights dollars publish by Farmers, plus the inclusion Anschutz, makes the move too attractive to pass up, without or with public funding set in place.

The San Diego mayoral office has gone on record saying the money-strapped city, running at an over $45 million deficit, couldn’t post extra money to construct a brand new stadium, but although town council successful in amending the Chargers lease to allow the team to go looking elsewhere within the county for brand spanking new stadium locations, none surfaced as a horny offer.

Much more because it develops.

After six losses the San Diego Chargers are in danger of not making the postseason as their chances are at risk. But the Chargers are not going to spend time focusing on playoff scenarios this week as they are getting ready for another big battle.

However, the Chargers are two games behind the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC West as they have got four more games in hand to go.

In the early part of this season, once there was a chance when the Chargers had the feeling like they had done more damages to themselves than the opponent lined up across from them.

But Monday cannot be included in that list after they clinched a 28-13 loss to the Raiders.

Two early turnovers that set up Oakland (6-6) in San Diego territory and the Raiders’ 251 rushing yards can be included as some of the things those worked against the Chargers (6-6).

Darren McFadden made a rush for 97 yards, Michael Bush contributed with 95 and Jason Campbell also rushed for 38 yards along with a touchdown in the first half.

It was reported earlier that the Chargers quarterback is looking for wins more than numbers or awards. However, he thinks that wins will come for them as the San Diego are poised for good games the bye week.

It seems that Philip Rivers would require a few more big games in this November and December to put Dan Marino’s all-time record behind as he is looking for the top place in the for passing yards in one season.

It was a great game for Philip Rivers as he worked very hard in the game against the Texans. He was brilliant as he managed to outscore the high-caliber Texans offense without his most familiar and accomplished targets.

Philip Rivers handed the Chargers an average of 7.3 yards per offensive play and managed to score four touchdowns.
